Brussels, July 3, 2025 (Lusa) - The European airline association Airlines for Europe (A4E) has standardised the size of free hand luggage, which is normally placed under the front seat, at 40 × 30 × 15 cm, it said in a statement.
The measure is in line with a 5 June decision by European Union (EU) transport ministers on airline passenger rights.
Airlines must also provide clear information about the dimensions of the authorised object, in a clear and accessible format, and the maximum dimensions and weight of the baggage they can take with them in the cabin.
Portuguese airline TAP and low-cost airlines Easyjet and Ryanair are members of A4E.
The European decision is the result of a judgement by the EU Court of Justice, which ruled that hand luggage cannot be subject to a surcharge, as long as it meets reasonable requirements in terms of weight and dimensions and complies with the applicable safety requirements.
