Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Altri buys Greenalia Forest, Greenalia Logistics in Galicia

Lisbon, May 14, 2025 (Lusa) - Altri has completed the acquisition of Galician forestry company Greenalia Forest and Greenalia Logistics from Smarttia, in what it says is a "strategic step" in consolidating its presence in Galicia, the company announced on Wednesday.

"This operation represents an important milestone for the implementation of the company's projects in that autonomous region and reflects Altri's commitment to sustainable development and the enhancement of Galicia's natural resources," it said in a statement.

Altri's subsidiary in Spain, Greenfiber, has a project for a pulp mill in Palas de Rei, Galicia, which is causing strong local opposition, with the Spanish government announcing that this investment will not receive European funds, as requested by the company, which has said it will appeal this decision.

According to the company, the deal now concluded "still reflects the company's purpose of moving forward in building a more renewable world, generating value for local communities and strengthening the surrounding economy."

With this acquisition, Altri said it "reaffirms its commitment to the local community and its partners", saying it will continue to work with local suppliers "that adopt best forest management practices, promoting job creation and boosting current forest productivity in Galicia, as well as the economic and social development of the autonomous community".

Altri is a European producer of cellulose fibres. It also operates in the forest-based renewable energy sector, namely industrial cogeneration through black liquor.

Its forestry strategy is based on the full use of all components provided by the forest, from cellulose fibres to black liquor and forest residues.

Altri currently manages around 92,800 hectares of forest in Portugal, all certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

The Altri Group also owns three cellulose fibre factories in Portugal, with an installed capacity of over 1.1 million tonnes annually.
