Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Meo instals capacity for 130,000 devices at Web Summit

Lisbon, Nov. 8, 2024 (Lusa) - Meo, a technology partner of the Web Summit since 2016, will have around three kilometres of optical fibre and 44 kilometres of UTP network cable installed and will have the capacity to support 130,000 devices simultaneously via wireless.

The technology summit kicks off next Monday in Lisbon and ends on November 14, with the organisation expecting more than 70,000 participants, around 1,000 investors and 3,00 startups.

Altice Portugal's operator is highlighting this year's edition's "capacity to support 130,000 simultaneous devices over the wireless network" and "around three kilometres of optical fibre and 44 kilometres of UTP network cable installed".

The Wi-Fi network (Meo Arena and FIL) was reinforced with "420 Access Points and 700 antennas (totalling 920 APs and 1,700 managed antennas) and 180 switches (totalling 320 managed)".

Meo also emphasises that 5G coverage was reinforced at the Meo Arena and mobile network coverage in the various areas of the event (FIL + MEO Arena + Night Summit).

Meo's technological operation will be carried out in two geographically redundant locations, ensuring that the event's communications will be monitored and reliable. In the operations room at the Web Summit, "a dedicated team with the capacity to act immediately on site" will be permanently available.

This team is in "close and constant collaboration with the operations centre, located in Picoas, made up of teams operating 24/7, to say the management and operation of all the core networks that support the services provided to the event (wired network, wireless network, mobile network, broadcast TV, roaming and international interconnections)", says the Altice Portugal operator.

"Meo's presence at the Web Summit reflects our commitment to offering innovative solutions that ensure excellent connectivity for one of the biggest technology and innovation events," said Meo's Chief Technology Officer (CTO), José Pedro Nascimento, quoted in a statement.

For his part, Artur Pereira, the Web Summit's country manager for Portugal and Brazil, recalls that Meo has been the trusted partner "to keep" the technology summit online.

"It's not easy to connect 70,000 people from all over the world, but we trust Meo to help us offer a fluid experience to everyone who passes through the venue, ready to connect, meet people and explore everything that the Web Summit offers," he concludes.

According to Meo, "it took more than two months of preparation, and the collaboration of a team of more than 170 professionals, including 100 employees, focused on implementing and reinforcing the network" for this year's edition.

Today, we will see the Connect Europe conference, the association of European telecom operators that brings together the main network and digital service providers in Europe in partnership with Altice Portugal.
