Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Still high demand for roofing in centre region one month after storm

Leiria, Portugal, Feb. 26, 2026 (Lusa) - One month after the passage of storm Kristin, Leiria city council, in central Portugal, continues to see high demand for roof tiles at the warehouse set up to deliver this material to those in need.

"There is still a lot of demand," Carlos Palheira, a councillor at the city council, told the Lusa news agency, noting that it has been possible to respond to those who come to the Solidarity Warehouse, located next to the Municipal Aerodrome.

While the council continues to receive and has the capacity to provide roof tiles, slates and cement, in the case of sandwich roofing panels there is "high demand" and a shortage in supply, noted the councillor, adding that the council has opted to give this material only to houses referred by the parish councils as primary residences and where families in economic need live.

Although demand for roof tiles has decreased in intensity over the course of this month, Carlos Palheira stressed that on Saturday alone, almost 7,000 roof tiles were distributed.

"Demand remains high and the warehouse will remain open as long as there is demand for roof tiles," he explained.

The local authority has already distributed almost 400,000 roof tiles in a month, believing that they will have reached around eight to nine thousand households in the district, which was severely hit by the storm.

"The figures are closely related to the impact and damage," he pointed out.

At the moment, the council has adjusted the opening hours of the Solidarity Warehouse, which now only operates in the morning and is closed on Sundays, when there was a drop in demand from those affected.
