Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Government wants to expand piped gas system in Maputo

Maputo, Sept. 2, 2025 (Lusa) - Mozambique's government has approved the strengthening of the position of state oil company Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH) in Maputo's piped gas distributor ENH-Kogas, to massify its access in the capital.

According to the communiqué from the ordinary cabinet meeting held in Maputo on Tuesday, the body approved the resolution authorising ENH "to acquire all the shares representing 70% of the share capital of ENH-Kogas, S.A., held by Kogas Moçambique".

"Aiming to strengthen its position in the market and ensure the massification of gas consumption in the city of Maputo and the district of Marracuene, areas of the concession," it reads.

ENH-Kogas, which brings together the Mozambican oil company and South Korean company Kogas, owns the piped natural gas distribution network in Maputo city and Marracuene, on the outskirts of the capital, according to the concession contract approved by the Council of Ministers in 2013.

According to the company, since 26 May 2014 piped natural gas produced in Mozambique "reaches the capital Maputo" through ENH-Kogas.

In the financial year ending 30 June 2024, ENH-Kogas saw its profits grow to 423.3 million meticais (€5.6 million), according to the report and accounts.
