Maputo, June 27, 2025 (Lusa) - Mozambique’s government and Chinese technology giant Huawei have announced that they are studying the possibility of building a factory to produce mobile phones tailored to rural needs in the country.

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Maria Manso, expressed the mutual desire during a visit to Huawei in Beijing, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“After receiving a detailed explanation of the activities of this company, which operates in the field of information technology, the Secretary of State and Huawei’s Vice President for Southern Africa, Tony Li, agreed to study the possibility of the company building a manufacturing plant in Mozambique for the production of mobile phones suitable for rural areas,” the statement said.

According to the ministry, the construction of the plant is part of the objective of “mobilising foreign investment for the country”.

On 18 June, the Chinese technology multinational highlighted Mozambique as one of the “reference cases” in the process of digitising the electricity sector on the African continent, during the ‘Huawei Electric Power Summit 2025’, an event promoted by Huawei focused on the digital transformation of the electricity sector.

Huawei revealed during the event that it is currently collaborating with a Mozambican energy company on the implementation of state-of-the-art digital solutions “with significant results.”
