Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Most believe USA, China will be superpowers in 2030 - Survey

Lisbon, Jan. 30, 2025 (Lusa) - Most Portuguese believe that the United States and China will be superpowers in 2030, according to a poll carried out in Portugal by Intercampus.

The opinion poll on global supremacy in 2030 was carried out in 37 countries on several continents as part of a survey by the Gallup International Association (GIA), conducted in Portugal by data collection company Intercampus.

According to the Intercampus press release, despite the recent inauguration of US President Donald Trump, the results of the inquiry reinforce the opinion that the United States is one of the world's leading powers, with one of the largest economies in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and one of the most advanced technological sectors on the market.

"The vast majority of Portuguese also agree that China is another of the great powers in the spotlight," according to the Intercampus note.

Russia, on the other hand, divides opinion, with only 34% of Portuguese saying that the country has the capacity to become a global superpower in the next five years.

These responses contrast with Russian President Vladimir Putin's efforts to increase the country's international presence and strengthen relations with non-Western allies.

At the European level, the potential power of the European Commission is questioned, with 48% of Portuguese saying that the European bloc will not be a superpower by 2030, according to Intercampus.

According to the poll, this opinion is also shared regarding the United Kingdom, with the vast majority of respondents (62%) arguing that the country will not soon be one of the leading powers.

According to the poll, the scenario is similar to Portugal's, with a global average of 61% of respondents saying that the United States will be a superpower by 2030, and 63% of responses favour China as a strong superpower candidate in the next five years.

However, the overall perception of Russia is more balanced. 41% of the sample say that the country will be a global superpower by 2030, compared to 42% who say this will not happen.

A total of 39,760 people were interviewed worldwide. In each country, around 1,000 men and women were interviewed between October and December 2024, either in person, by telephone, or online. The inquiry's margin of error is ± 3-5%, with a confidence level of 95%.
