Lusa - Business News - Angola: Unemployment rate falls to 30.8% in 2024 Q3

Luanda, Jan. 22, 2025 (Lusa) - Angola's unemployment rate fell to 30.8% in the third quarter of 2024, down 4.5% compared with the previous three months, although it grew slightly in the 15-24 age group, INE announced on Wednesday.

The data is contained in the rapid information sheet of the Angolan Employment Survey (IEA), released today by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

According to INE, the unemployed population aged 15 or over was estimated at 5.4 million people, with the unemployment rate increasing by 0.2% in the 15 to 24 age group (from 56.4% to 56.6%) and a reduction of 4.5% in the population aged 15 or over (from 32.3% to 30.%).

In the third quarter of 2024, among the working-age population (people aged 15 and over), 12,315,283 people declared that they had worked in the reference period, either in an employed or self-employed capacity or in a family business.

 Another 5,482,128 people (unemployed population) had no paid work or any other work and were available to work in the reference period or the following 15 days.

In Angola, 45% of the population is under 14, 53% between 15 and 64 and % over 65. The average age is 16.3 years.

The employment rate was estimated at 62.0% (35.6% for young people between 15 and 24), higher in rural areas and among the male population.

Around 46.3% of the employed population carries out their main activity in agriculture, animal production, hunting, forestry and fishing, followed by wholesale and retail trade with 23.1%.

In Angola, the unemployment rate is an estimated percentage based on people who do not have a formal or informal job, but declare that they are available for work.
