Macau, China, Nov. 11, 2024 (Lusa) - The number of visitors to Macau so far this year already exceeds 30 million - more than in the whole of last year, the territory's Public Security Police (PSP) has announced.
The PSP said that the cumulative total of 30 million visitors entering the Chinese special administrative region had been reached by midday on Sunday, in a statement released that evening.
Last year, Macau received 28.2 million visitors, almost five times more than the previous year and 71.6% of the record of 39.4 million set in 2019, according to official data from the region's Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
The PSP noted that the number of visitors "has seen a notable increase" during 2024.
From the beginning of this year up until Sunday, Macau saw the arrival of an average of some 95,000 visitors per day, 27% up on last year and around 87% of the level experienced before the start of the pandemic, the police said.
According to the PSP, around 91% of visitors came from mainland China or Hong Kong, while only 7% came from abroad.
