Lisbon, Sept. 10, 2024 (Lusa) - Eight US films, including Sean Baker's ‘Anora’, a series of conversations with Robert De Niro, Whoopi Goldberg and Patty Jenkins, plus some Portuguese cinema will be among elements featuring in the first Tribeca Festival Lisboa, to be held in October in the Portuguese capital and being presented on Tuesday in New York.
The Tribeca Festival Lisboa, scheduled for 17 to 19 October at Lisbon's Beato Innovation District, is the first offshoot in Europe of the New York festival founded more than two decades ago by De Niro and film producer Jane Rosenthal.
The Lisbon event had already been announced in April, with the announcement of the names of some guests, namely the two founders of Tribeca, as well as director Patty Jenkins, actress Whoopi Goldberg and actor Griffin Dunne.
on Tuesday, organisers revealed that the programme is to feature some of the "best winners of the 2024 festival circuit" such as ‘Anora’ - a film by Sean Baker that won the Palme d'Or at Cannes - and ‘In the Summers’ by Lacorazza Samudio, which won an award at Sundance, a US festival that is one of the top events for independent film.
The programme includes "a mix of independent films from the United States, Portuguese films, series, podcasts, musical performances and live talks with international and national stars" according to a statement by the Impresa group, which owns the SIC television channel and the OPTO streaming platform, both festival partners.
The Tribeca Festival Lisboa is also to host the Portuguese premiere of Tony Goldwyn's 2023 film ‘Ezra’ - with this to be followed by a conversation with Robert De Niro - and the international premiere of ‘A Bronx Tale, The Original One Man Show’ with the presence of the screenwriter, director and protagonist, Chazz Palminteri.
The list of films also includes ‘Jazzy’ by Morrisa Maltz, and the premiere of ‘Group Therapy’ by Neil Berkeley, both of which directors are to be in Lisbon.
There will also be a score of talks on various topics, such as the impact of artificial intelligence on film production, the future of streaming and the art of storytelling.
As well as De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, Whoopi Goldberg and Patty Jenkins, organisers promised "some of the most prominent voices in Portuguese cinema today" such as Ricardo Araújo Pereira, Daniela Ruah and César Mourão.
The Tribeca Festival Lisboa also intends to highlight Portuguese productions, with, for example, the series ‘Azul’ (Blue) by director Pedro Varela, the feature film ‘Podia Ter Esperado Por Agosto’ (You Could Have Waited for August) by César Mourão and the series ‘Unicórnios’ (Unicorns) "about the start-up culture."
The Tribeca Festival Lisboa, which was presented on Tuesday in New York in the presence of Lisbon's mayor, Carlos Moedas, is the result of a partnership between Tribeca Enterprises, SIC television, the streaming platform OPTO and Lisbon city council.
