Lisbon, July 31, 2024 (Lusa) - Portugal's government launched a call for tenders on Wednesday under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), of around €100 million to promote energy storage in the national electricity grid.
"This initiative, part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), aims to install at least 500 MW of energy storage capacity in the electricity grid (both at transmission and distribution level) by the end of 2025," the Ministry of the Environment and Energy said in a statement.
The call for tenders has an investment of €99.75 million and was launched through the Environmental Fund, and applications must be submitted on the Fund's portal by 2 September.
Eligible projects can receive up to €30 million, in view of the "growing need to optimise and manage the electricity grid in a flexible way, especially in light of the current geopolitical situation and its impact on the energy market".
The minister for the environment and energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, said that this tender is "a unique opportunity for companies and institutions that want to contribute to a more sustainable and independent energy future in Portugal, and be part of the solution to today's energy challenges".
"This is a significant step on the road to energy independence for Portugal and to building a greener and more sustainable energy future," the minister added.
