Rio de Janeiro, Sept. 21, 2026 (Lusa) - Leaders from the Brazilian oil sector argued that Mozambique has what it takes to establish itself as an energy powerhouse and attract new investment, highlighting the country's natural gas reserves, strategic location and ongoing projects.
These views were expressed following separate meetings between the Mozambican president, Daniel Chapo, and officials from the Brazilian Petroleum Institute (IBP) and Shell Brasil – one of Brazil's leading oil and gas producers – on the sidelines of the Oil and Gas Forum 2026 (ROG.e) on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
«Mozambique is very well positioned to develop its energy industry and, obviously, to become one of the world's largest producers of hydrocarbons,» said the chair of Shell Brasil, João Rosa, stating that Mozambique «has everything it needs to become a major energy power», highlighting its gas reserves, the existence of world-class projects and its links to international markets.
According to the executive, the company discussed with the Mozambican delegation future opportunities for cooperation, the development of technical skills, the sharing of international experience and potential investments.
«We discussed the new law and the fact that certain conditions have been updated; we will examine this very carefully and closely in order to identify opportunities that are beneficial to all,» he said.
Meanwhile, the president of the Rio Oil and Gas Forum, Nelson Filho, argued that Brazil's accumulated experience in the exploration of oil, gas and renewable energy could help accelerate the development of Mozambique's energy sector: «We see a unique opportunity for the two countries to work together and develop together.» According to him, Mozambique has one of the world's largest gas reserves and could play a significant role in the current transformation of energy markets.
Filho spoke of the importance of gas in the energy transition and pointed out that «Mozambique has one of the world's largest gas reserves».
In his view, the country's geographical location further enhances its potential: «Mozambique is well-positioned and has all the necessary conditions to lead this entire process, not in the long term, but in the short and medium term.» The meetings took place on the sidelines of Daniel Chapo's participation in ROG.e 2026, where the Mozambican Head of State is speaking and promoting investment opportunities in the national energy sector.
According to information released by the Mozambican Presidency, the meetings addressed investment opportunities, oil and gas exploration, staff training and the development of technical skills, with a view to deepening cooperation between Mozambique and Brazil.
