Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Almost half a million e-money agents across nation

Maputo, Sept. 21, 2026 (Lusa) - In the second quarter of 2026, Mozambique had almost half a million e-money agents, up 27,333 in three months, consolidating mobile financial services as the country's main channel for financial inclusion.

Data from the Bank of Mozambique's financial inclusion reports, compiled by Lusa on Monday, show the central bank recorded 494,955 e-money agents across the country at the end of the second quarter of 2026, up from 467,622 in the previous quarter.

These agents enable payments for services, transfers and cash withdrawals, offering an alternative to visiting a traditional bank branch.

Mozambique currently has three e-money operators – M-Pesa, e-Mola and M-Kesh – which provide financial services via mobile phone and constitute the main channel for expanding financial inclusion in the country, in addition to 15 banks.

In all, including traditional banking, Mozambique had 532,761 access points to financial services by the end of June, 44,861 more than those recorded at the end of the first quarter of 2026.

The city of Maputo continued to have the most access points, with 87,833, followed by Nampula with 78,089 and Maputo province with 74,168.

Meanwhile, the traditional banking network maintained coverage across 128 districts, corresponding to 82.6% of the national total, unchanged from the previous quarter. The density of bank branches stood at 9.09 per 10,000 square kilometres at the end of the second quarter, slightly below the 9.13 recorded in the first three months of the year.

The Bank of Mozambique also recorded 650 bank branches, 77 microbank and credit union branches, 329 banking agents, 1,291 cash machines (ATMs) and 31,316 point-of-sale (POS) terminals.

The Bank of Mozambique published the data in its reports on financial inclusion indicators and the distribution of access points for the second quarter of 2026.
