Maputo, Sept. 3, 2026 (Lusa) - The director of the Mozambique Government Information Office (GabInfo) on Thursday called, in Maputo, for institutions to adapt to digital transformation, arguing that an uninformed society cannot achieve development.
«Our institutions cannot avoid this necessity. They must adapt and, therefore, accept that the process of digital transformation is clearly unavoidable,» argued Luís Canhemba at the opening of the institution's 5th Coordinating Council meeting in Maputo.
According to Mr Canhemba, «digital technologies are transforming the way people receive, produce and share information, creating new challenges for institutions and organisations operating in the field of information and communication».
«The objective for all of us must be very clear: to ensure government communication that is more coordinated, more professional, swifter and more focused on citizens' information needs,» said Canhemba.
The two-day meeting brings together leaders from the media and information sector to reflect on the challenges of public communication in the country under the theme «Public Communication in the Age of Digital Transformation».
In his address, Canhemba also emphasised the need to improve coordination between state media organisations and the media to ensure that information reaches every part of the country: «Today, this is not inconceivable; we have the technology, we have the human and technological capacity, so we must bring or deliver information to even the most remote places.» The Mozambican authorities emphasised that information and communication are strategic assets for the country's economic and social development, highlighting the need to ensure that citizens have access to information regardless of their geographical location.
«An uninformed society is inconceivable; it is impossible for an uninformed society to achieve development,» he added.
Disinformation and the spread of fake news were also highlighted by the official as some of the main current challenges facing public communication.
«We also face the challenge of disinformation, of fake news. We must consider how we can tackle the issue of disinformation, particularly in a context where it disrupts the daily lives of some citizens,» he pointed out.
