In Europe, the main stock exchanges opened lower today amid a further rise in Brent crude to $90, following the escalation of the conflict between the US and Iran and renewed air strikes.

The euro has risen by 0.03% against the dollar and is trading at $1.1442 on the Frankfurt foreign exchange market.

Following the ninth night of US attacks on Iran, extending targets beyond strictly military ones to include bridges, infrastructure and ports, and given that the prospect of a return to a ceasefire is minimal, the price of Brent has risen by 3% and stands at over $90 a barrel, although it did briefly exceed $91 in the early hours of this morning.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard stated today that two oil tankers attempting to transit an «unsafe» route south of the Strait of Hormuz exploded on Sunday night and «were immobilised», whilst the military escalation and confrontation with the United States over control of this maritime strait continues.

Consequently, the price of Brent crude, the European benchmark, for September delivery, rose by 3% to $90.75, whilst West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the US benchmark, also for September delivery, rose by 2.53% to $83.85.

Dow Jones and Nasdaq futures are now down 0.12% and up 0.15%, respectively.
