Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Farmer confederation joins Thursday's protest in Brussels

Lisbon, Dec. 16, 2025 (Lusa) - The Confederation of Portuguese Farmers (CPF) will participate in the farmers' demonstration in Brussels on Thursday against the European Commission's (EC) new proposal for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

The CPF delegation includes more than two dozen participants and will be led by its president, Álvaro Mendonça e Moura, and its secretary-general, Luís Mira.

"Portuguese and European farmers will be protesting against the European Commission's proposal to reduce the budget for agriculture in the European Union's (EU) next multiannual financial framework," reads a statement.

According to the CPF, 12,000 farmers from all Member States are expected to demonstrate against the change in the CAP's architecture.

"These policies represent a step backwards for the CAP, the only truly common policy in Europe. It is incomprehensible that, when the European Union budget sees a 40% increase, a 20% reduction for agriculture is proposed, giving priority to other areas, such as investment in defence," said Álvaro Mendonça e Moura in a statement.

"With these European policies, particularly the merger of rural development with territorial cohesion, Portugal will be much more disadvantaged than other countries," he added.

The CPF demands "a fair CAP that is capable of responding to the challenges of the agri-food sector".
