Faro, Portugal, Dec. 16, 2025 (Lusa) - The Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) on Tuesday welcomed the return of Formula 1 to Portimão in 2027 and 2028, considering it an "excellent opportunity to promote" the region.
"For the CCDR/Algarve, what is good for the Algarve is good for the country, and this is an excellent opportunity to promote the region, attract private and public investment, and generate revenue from tourism and related economic activities," reads a statement released by the entity.
The Commission emphasised that international sporting events of this scale "have a multiplier effect in various sectors, contributing to the economic growth strategy".
The decision to bring the world's premier motor racing event to Portugal and the Algarve "creates jobs, increases tourism revenue and will further enhance the global tourism offering", the organisation said.
The CCDR/Algarve believes that this reunion of the country with Formula 1 should be used "to translate into real and lasting gains for the country, the regional economy and territorial cohesion".
The organisation points out that, in 2024, there were 98,598 companies based in the region, of which around 20,000 were linked to accommodation, catering and similar activities, employing 60,000 people in accommodation and catering and 32,000 in commerce and services.
"The Gross Value Added (GVA) generated by accommodation and catering companies reached €1.659 billion, while wholesale and retail trade amounted to around €848 million," the note reads.
The return of the Portuguese Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2027 and 2028 to the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão was announced today by the Minister for the Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida.
The agreement between the Portuguese government and the championship promoters was signed in London. Still, the date of the Grand Prix will only be known in June 2026, when the 2027 World Championship calendar is set, and it is expected to be part of the European “season” during the spring.
These will be the 19th and 20th editions of the Portuguese Grand Prix, once again in the Algarve, after the initial races in 1958 and 1960 at the Boavista circuit in Porto, the 1959 race in Monsanto, Lisbon, and between 1984 and 1996 at the Estoril Autodrome in Cascais.
Formula 1 returned to Portugal in 2020 and 2021, after a 24-year absence from the World Championship, following the reorganisation of the calendars due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with two races held at the Algarve circuit in Portimão.
British driver Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, then with the Mercedes team, won both races on Portuguese soil.
