Lisbon, Oct. 24, 2025 (Lusa) - Former MEP Ana Gomes was made a defendant on Thursday following a complaint lodged by Solverde over statements the company considered damaging to her reputation, the socialist confirmed to Lusa on Friday.
Without wishing to give any more details about the case, Ana Gomes added that the constitution as a defendant was not unexpected, given that Solverde had announced it would proceed with a criminal complaint against her.
In March, Solverde - Sociedade de Investimentos Turísticos da Costa Verde S.A. said in a statement that statements made by Ana Gomes about the casino's gaming control and regulation system were "extremely serious and an attack on its good name and reputation".
The company said at the time that the complaint lodged by its board of directors was aimed at "ascertaining responsibility and the respective sanctions".
Today, the former MEP insisted to Lusa that the case of Spinumviva, a company owned by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro's family, "has not been clarified" and that this process "is an opportunity" to publicly raise issues "related to the intransparency of the gaming concession process".
"Solverde is an interested party, and the decision rests with the government of the person who was Solverde's lawyer and then Solverde's lawyer, who is the prime minister. The intransparency is total," said Ana Gomes, maintaining that "the deadline for the tender was minimal, in the summer, it ended on 5 September, and no more is known."
In March, the socialist told Lusa that she had informed the Attorney General's Office, the Judicial Police and the Financial Intelligence Unit of a report to the European Public Prosecutor's Office relating to the Spinumviva group's licence and the alleged lack of regulation of casinos.
In the same month, the Attorney General of the Republic, Amadeu Guerra, announced that the Public Prosecutor's Office had opened a preventive enquiry based on three complaints, which is still ongoing, to assess whether there are grounds to open an enquiry.
The information that Ana Gomes had been accused was first reported by Gomes herself to Observador.
