Jakarta, Oct. 23, 2025 (Lusa) - Brazil "opposes coercive unilateral measures that distort trade," Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said today in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, where he has been since Wednesday.
'Like Indonesia, Brazil opposes coercive unilateral measures that distort trade and limit economic integration,' Lula da Silva said in a speech after a meeting with Brazilian and Indonesian businesspeople in the capital of the Asian country, which borders Timor-Leste.
The Brazilian head of state's remarks were made ahead of a possible meeting with US President Donald Trump in Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital, where both leaders will be attending the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders' summit, taking place between 26 and 28 October in that city.
The possibility of a meeting between the two heads of state was admitted on Wednesday by a senior US government official and by the Brazilian government, which said there was "space" on the agenda.
Lula da Silva will be in Malaysia and at the ASEAN summit as a representative of the BRICS, which includes, in addition to Brazil, Russia, China, India and South Africa, among others.
The meeting, if it takes place, will occur amid commercial tensions, following the United States' imposition of 50% tariffs on Brazilian products, after the trial in which former President Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for attempting a coup d'état.
The two heads of state met at the last United Nations General Assembly, held in September in New York. They began a rapprochement, followed by a telephone call in which the Brazilian President proposed a meeting with his US counterpart during the ASEAN summit.
