Lisbon, Oct. 21, 2025 (Lusa) - Helexia, a French company belonging to the Voltalia group, has signed an agreement with NGEN Group to implement energy storage systems in Portugal with an investment of €20 million in 2026.
The agreement provides for the development of a pipeline of more than 100 megawatts (MW), and Helexia expects to complete around a quarter of this (25 MW) during 2026, representing an investment of around €20 million.
"What we estimate from this 100 MW pipeline is to start later this year and, during 2026, implement a quarter of this capacity, around 25 MW, and we estimate an investment of around €20 million for this," said the director of Helexia in Portugal, Luis Pinho, in an interview with Lusa.
These storage solutions consist of the implementation of “behind-the-meter” systems that allow "companies to reduce costs, achieve greater autonomy in managing their energy and provide services to the electricity grid, generating new sources of revenue," according to a statement.
The system includes photovoltaic panels, allowing the battery to be charged whenever there is surplus solar production.
A “behind-the-meter” solution consists of an energy generation, storage and management system that allows the company to consume the electricity produced internally before resorting to the electricity grid.
"With NGEN, we want to be an active part of this natural evolution of the energy sector, which will necessarily move towards ever greater digitalisation and decentralisation," said Luis Pinho.
He added that these systems allow for "arbitrage of consumption and price, as well as promoting network services".
The director of Helexia also said that this business model "allows companies to be protagonists in the security and stability of the electricity system, no longer being just energy buyers, reinforcing the concept of “prosumer”, but becoming a producer, a consumer and, at the same time, a guarantor of the stability of the system".
Helexia also highlighted that these storage solutions are in line with the new Global System Management Procedures Manual (MPGGS), published by the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE).
The NGEN Group is a European energy technology company specialising in battery energy storage systems (BESS) and smart grid solutions.
Helexia works on the development and implementation of decarbonisation solutions through the use of renewable energy and the optimisation of energy consumption.
