Lusa - Business News - Macau: Monetary authority bolsters financial cooperation with Cabo Verde

Macau, China, Oct 3, 2025 (Lusa) - The Monetary Authority of Macau (AMCM) announced on Friday that it had signed a new agreement to "deepen cooperation" in financial supervision with Cabo Verde's central bank.

The financial regulator of the Chinese region said that the protocol with the Bank of Cabo Verde covers the "fight against money laundering and terrorist financing, technical cooperation, training of professional staff".

According to a statement, the agreement also covers "supervision and exchange relating to emerging financial services, to safeguard the security and stability of the respective financial systems in series".

The document was signed on Thursday during the 12th edition of the Meeting of Central Bank Governors of Portuguese-speaking Countries, held in Praia, the capital of Cabo Verde.

The meeting, which took place behind closed doors, included interventions by governors and representatives of the central banks of Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, the Bank of Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, and Timor-Leste, as well as the Central Bank of West African States and the Bank of Central African States.

"This initiative symbolises a deepening of cooperation and exchange between the two institutions in the field of financial supervision," added the AMCM.

"This new agreement focuses particularly on cooperation in prudential supervision, establishing a specific framework for cooperation between the AMCM and the Bank of Cabo Verde," added the regulator.

The AMCM signed the first cooperation and technical assistance agreement with the Bank of Cabo Verde in 1999.

In September 2024, during the second Conference of Central Bank Governors and Financial Officers between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, which took place in Macau, the Macau financial regulator announced that it would update the protocol with its counterpart in Cabo Verde.

The AMCM has already signed bilateral cooperation agreements with 12 financial supervisory authorities from eight Portuguese-speaking countries.
