Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Unemployment rate falls to 6.1% in August - official

Lisbon, Oct. 1, 2025 (Lusa) - The unemployment rate in Portugal fell 0.2 points to 6.1% in August compared to the same month in 2024, and rose 0.1 percentage points compared to July, according to a provisional estimate released by Statistics Portugal (INE) on Wednesday.

‘The unemployment rate stood at 6.1%, higher than in July 2025 (0.1 percentage points) and lower than in May 2025 (0.1 percentage points) and August 2024 (0.2 percentage points),’ said the INE.

INE also released the final figures for July, revising the unemployment rate for that month upwards to 6.0% (compared to the 5.8% initially estimated), still the lowest figure since March 2022 (5.9 %).

The July unemployment rate was 0.1 percentage points lower than in June 2025, 0.2 percentage points lower than in April 2025 and 0.5 percentage points lower than in July 2024.

In August, the labour underutilisation rate was estimated at 10.4%, higher than the previous month (0.3 percentage points), lower than three months earlier (0.1 percentage points) and the same month a year earlier (0.4 percentage points).

As for the inactivity rate, it was estimated at 30.3 %, the lowest figure since the start of the data series (February 1998), while the employed population (5,265,400) reached the highest figure.

The unemployed population (341,300) increased in August compared to July 2025 (7,700; 2.3%) and decreased compared to May 2025 (6,100; 1.8%) and August 2024 (3,800; 1.1%).

According to INE, the active population (5,606,700) increased compared to July 2025 (9,800; 0.2%), May 2025 (37,800; 0.7%) and August 2024 (170,800; 3.1%).

In turn, the inactive population (2,438,800) fell in relation to the three comparison periods: the previous month (4,300; 0.2%), three months earlier (17,400; 0.7%), and the same month in 2024 (56,100; 2.3%).

In August, the unemployment rate for women (6.3%) exceeded that for men (5.9%) by 0.4 percentage points, while the unemployment rate for adults (5.1%) remained unchanged from the figure for June of the same year.

In June and August 2025, the youth unemployment rate was at its lowest level - 18.9% - since June 2023 (18.5%).
