Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Post office suspends all packages worth more than $100 to the US

Praia, Aug. 27, 2025 (Lusa) - As of Friday, Cabo Verde's postal service will stop sending parcels with a value of more than $100 (€86.30) to the United States.

The decision comes after the discontinuation of the Minimis regime (exemption from customs duties for imported goods) in the United States, which until now allowed parcels worth less than $800 (€690.66) to enter the country without paying.

The company explains in the press release that, with the change, all products imported into the United States will now have applicable taxes, but it is not yet clear who will have to pay the fees or how.

There are also no computerised solutions ready for the post office to handle this process.

"The technical details were only released on 15 August, leaving little time for preparation," adds the statement.

For this reason, Cabo V erde's Post Office will temporarily suspend sending goods and samples with a commercial value of more than $100, pending guidance from the Universal Postal Union and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) - United States Customs and Border Protection.

The communiqué points out that non-commercial shipments, such as gifts worth up to $100, are still exempt from taxes, provided they comply with CBP rules and are of Cabo Verde's origin.

Documents, letters and goods of no value can be sent as normal. Cabo Verde thus joins more than a dozen countries, from Japan to Australia and many European ones, including Portugal, whose main postal companies have temporarily suspended shipments of goods to the United States (US) due to the decision by President Donald Trump's administration to end the Minimis regime.
