Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Hybrid wind-solar farm at design stage in Torres Vedras

Torres Vedras, Portugal, Aug. 27, 2025 (Lusa) - Sociedade Portuguesa de Energia Eólica, which belongs to EDP Renováveis, wants to invest in the construction of a hybrid wind and photovoltaic power station in Torres Vedras, and is currently consulting on the project proposal.

It will consist of a wind farm with 12 wind turbines and a photovoltaic farm with a total capacity of 135.4 megawatts (MW), with a battery energy storage system with an installed capacity of 15 MW for four hours, according to the proposal under public consultation by the Portuguese Environment Agency.

The plant "combines the use of wind and solar energy, with a common injection point into the electricity grid, in order to make the intermittent operation of these two technologies compatible, thus forming a hybrid energy production system".

The park will be connected to the electricity grid via a 60-kilovolt (kV) power line, stretching around 12.5 kilometres from the substation to be built as part of this project to the Carvoeira substation of the National Electricity Network (REN).

Connecting the two hubs will involve a 30 kV power line, approximately 3.4 kilometres long, to be constructed.

The hybrid power station "is intended to produce electricity from renewable and non-polluting sources - wind and sun - contributing to the diversification of the country's energy sources and to the fulfilment of the commitments made by the state concerning the production of energy from renewable sources, to inject 61.2 MW of power into the public grid," it is stressed.

The project contributes to the state's objectives for combating climate change, achieving energy transition and carbon neutrality by 2050, and increasing the production of electricity from renewable sources by promoting the reduction of emissions associated with the use of fossil fuels in energy production.

The project is planned for the parishes of Campelos/Outeiro da Cabeça, Ramalhal, Maxial/Monte Redondo, Santa Maria/SãoPedro/Matacães, Dois Porto/Runa and Carvoeira/Carmões.

The investment is subject to an Environmental Impact Assessment at the preliminary study stage.

On Tuesday, at a public meeting of the Torres Vedras City Council, the councillor for Urbanism and Municipal Works, Francisco Martins, said that a request for prior information had been submitted to this municipality in the Lisbon district, and that the investment was not yet at the design stage.
