Lusa - Business News - Portugal: High tides, unusual swell destroy Faro beach walkways

Faro, Portugal, Aug. 26, 2025 (Lusa) - The rising tide and the strong swell recorded at high tide on Faro beach caused the destruction of the wooden walkway and some access walkways at dawn on Tuesday, said sources from the captaincy and the town hall.

"Due to the combination of some swell and a high tide, the sea reached places where it usually doesn't," explained the captain of the Porto harbour, Vítor Dias, warning that these conditions will recur in the coming hours and that caution is needed in the face of rising sea levels and agitation.

The harbour master explained that sea conditions are being influenced by the passage of a hurricane through the North Atlantic and that it will have a greater impact on the west coast of Portugal.

"People should be especially careful, especially at high tide," the harbour master warned.

The same source said that Faro Câmara is "endeavouring to remove and subsequently replace" the walkway, which was damaged and has wood scattered on the beach.

A source from Faro Câmara also told Lusa that the cause of the structure's destruction was the hhigh tide and swell, and that the municipality is carrying out cleaning and support work for concessionaires, who also saw some of the walkways leading to their areas affected.

The municipality source also warned of the possibility of waves and rising sea levels once again reaching areas that are normally out of reach.

Bathing activities at the concessionaires will continue, although they may be temporarily or partially affected, said the local authority source.
