Lisbon, Aug. 25, 2025 (Lusa) - Damage caused by the fires to machinery, animals and crops is covered by exceptional support for farmers, with an allocation of up to €10,000, according to a decree published in the Diário da República on Monday.
"Damage to animals, annual crops, multi-annual plantations, machinery, equipment and spaces to support agricultural activity are considered eligible," reads the decree-law.
The prime minister, Luís Montenegro, announced on Thursday at a press conference in Viseu, where the extraordinary cabinet meeting was held, a "new legislative instrument" to be adopted from now on in circumstances similar to those the country has experienced in recent weeks.
Among the 45 measures approved is financial support for the “profitability of agricultural production potential and exceptional support for farmers to compensate for losses, even through undocumented expenses”, up to a maximum of €10,000.
This support covers damages, even those that are not documented, through inspections by the municipalities and the CCDR - Commission for Coordination and Regional Development.
The exceptional aid is paid in a single instalment.
According to the same law, extraordinary support will also be granted for the purchase of animal feed for livestock producers affected by the fires who own farms with cattle, sheep and goats.
Although no further details were given, the government also announced extraordinary support for beekeepers whose apiaries were affected by the fires, to ensure the purchase of feed for bee colonies.
The agriculture minister, José Manuel Fernandes, will also call for tenders to support the re-establishment of agricultural production potential, including the replacement of animals, plantations, the purchase of machinery and equipment, warehouses or other buildings to support agriculture.
