Praia, Aug. 22, 2025 (Lusa) - The US embassy in Cabo Verde announced on Friday that the US State Department will provide emergency assistance to support the response to the aftermath of the storm that caused nine deaths.
The aid, channelled through the International Federation of Red Cross Societies, "includes food, hygiene kits and relief items for families seriously affected by the flooding and landslides in Santo Antão and São Vicente," the statement said.
The New Hampshire National Guard, in the United States, transported the donations in a KC46 aircraft, which arrived in São Vicente on Monday, destined for the local health structure, with the support of the Cabo Verde's Doctors Association.
Among the products sent are paediatric and surgical medicines, oxygen administration systems, clothing, food and medical supplies.
"The United States remains steadfast in its commitment to support efforts led by Cabo Verde to save lives, reduce suffering and respond to the urgent needs of communities affected by the floods," he added.
The storm on the island of São Vicente about a week ago caused nine deaths, two missing persons, flooded neighbourhoods and damage to roads, houses, bridges and commercial establishments, as well as power outages.
The government has declared a six-month disaster in São Vicente, Porto Novo (Santo Antão) and the two municipalities of São Nicolau, with a response plan that includes emergency support for families and businesses, subsidised credit lines and non-repayable grants.
The measures will be financed by the National Emergency Fund and the Sovereign Emergency Fund, created in 2019 to respond to natural disasters and external shocks.
