Lisbon, Aug. 20, 2025 (Lusa) - The number of unemployed people registered at job centres fell by 4% in July, and 0.2% compared to June, to 292,825, and has been falling for six consecutive months, according to data released by the IEFP on Wednesday.

According to the Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP), at the end of July, "292,825 unemployed people were registered with the employment services on the mainland and in the Autonomous Regions, which represents 66.9% of a total of 437,542 job applications".

That's 12,314 fewer people registered with job centres than in July 2024. "In absolute terms, those registered for less than 12 months (-12,727), those looking for a new job (-11,424) and those over the age of 25 (-10,577) contributed to this decline," says the IEFP in a statement released today.

Compared to June, there were 663 fewer people registered at job centres.

This is the sixth consecutive month of decline and, as with the previous month, the number of people registered is the lowest since July 2023, when 284,330 people were registered at job centres, according to an analysis of the available data.

Concerning the most significant occupational groups, compared to the same period last year, "there was a decrease in unemployment in the occupational groups of "farmers and skilled agricultural, fishing and forestry workers" (-18.5%); "administrative staff" (-14.2%), "technicians and middle-level occupations" (-9.7%) and "skilled industrial, construction and craft workers" (-7.2%)".

On the other hand, there was an increase in unemployment "in the professional group of “representatives of the legislature, executive bodies, leaders, directors and government managers” (+17.3%) and “unskilled workers” (+3.2%)".

In regional terms, registered unemployment fell in all regions, except the Alentejo, compared to the same period last year, with the highest figure recorded in the autonomous region of Madeira (-19.4%).

In the chain comparison, there were "some increases in the North, Centre and Alentejo regions", reveals the IEFP.

At the end of July, unfulfilled job offers totalled 19,014 in employment services across the country, which corresponds to an increase in offers on file in the annual analysis (+6,836; +56.1%), but a decrease compared to the previous month (-292; -1.5%).
