Lisbon, Aug. 19, 2025 (Lusa) - The Industrial Production Price Index (IPPI) fell 3.7% year-on-year in July, reflecting reductions in the prices of intermediate and non-durable consumer goods and energy, Statistics Portugal (INE) announced on Tuesday.
In June, the IPPI had already recorded a year-on-year decline of 3.0 percentage points.
According to the INE, the slowdown in industrial production prices in July resulted from “intermediate goods” (contribution of -1.4 percentage points, compared to -1.2 percentage points in June), “non-durable consumer goods” and “energy” (contributions of 0.13 percentage points in both cases, compared with 0.12 and 0.09 percentage points in June, respectively).
These contributions reflected price decreases of 4.0% in “intermediate goods”, 4.3% in “non-durable consumer goods” and 7.6% in “energy” (variations of 3.4%, 3.8% and 5.5% in the previous month).
“Investment goods” and “durable consumer goods” were the only groups to show price increases in July, standing at 2.0% and 1.8% (1.2% and 2.7% in the previous month), contributing 0.3 percentage points and 0.1 percentage points (0.2 percentage points and 0.1 percentage points in the previous month) to the change in the aggregate index.
Excluding the “energy” group, industrial production prices fell by 2.9% in July, following a 2.5% decrease in June.
On a month-on-month basis, the IPPI recorded a variation of 0.1%, 0.7 percentage points lower than the value noted in July 2024.
According to INE, the “energy” and “capital goods” groupings drove this positive change, contributing 0.2 and 0.1 percentage points to the aggregate change, respectively, as a result of changes of 1.4% and 0.4%.
On the other hand, the “consumer goods” and “intermediate goods” groups reduced the total variation of the index by 0.2 and 0.1 percentage points, as a result of changes of 0.5% and 0.1%.
“The variation in ‘consumer goods’ reflects a 0.5% decline in ‘non-durable consumer goods’, whereas ‘durable consumer goods’ recorded a 0.1% change,” the INE concluded.
