Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori retained their mixed doubles title at the US Open tennis tournament, with the Italian pair defeating the third-seeded duo of Poland's Iga Swiatek and Norway's Casper Ruud 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 in the final.
"Our secret is that we practice a lot for this format, mixed doubles: we're friends, and on the court it's fun", Vavassori told Supertennis.
"It was crazy," said Errani.
"It was incredibly hard to get back in the game after losing the second set.
Andrea gave me an incredible boost: I have a lot of fun with him, and in the supertiebreak he did things that only he in the world can do." Vavassori praised the new mixed doubles format, featuring three best-of-four sets and a final supertiebreak.
"Last year in the final here, I looked at her face and thought, 'We're going to win this.' "We knew we were much more organized than the others.
"We're very good friends, and that helps us: doubles is a product that works, the crowd went crazy, they saw a lot of great shots.
"It's a starting point for doubles, mixed or not: singles will always be king, but doubles can grow a lot."
