Lusa - Business News - Portugal: 1.5% rise in public sector jobs in Q2 to 760,700 workers

Lisbon, Aug. 14, 2025 (Lusa) - The number of public administration workers increased in the second quarter of 2025 to 760,700, up 1.5% on the same period last year, according to figures released by the DGAEP on Thursday.

"On 30 June 2025, employment in the public administration sector stood at 760,728 jobs, corresponding to +1.5% (11,030 jobs) compared to the same period last year," said the Statistical Synthesis of Public Employment (SIEP), drawn up by the Directorate-General for Administration and Public Employment (DGAEP).

Compared to the previous quarter, “the increase was 0.2% (+1,692 jobs)”.

The increase compared to the second quarter of 2024 is due to the growth in employment in central administration, where there was an increase of 7,483 jobs, and in local administration, where there was an increase of 4,705 workers.

On the other hand, "in the regional administrations of the Azores and Madeira and in the Social Security Funds there were reductions in employment (-688, -188 and -282 jobs, respectively)," says the DGAEP.

In central administration, the increase compared to April to June last year was 1.3% and, according to the directorate-general, came mainly from the government areas of health, education, science and innovation.

In the case of health, there was an increase of 3,656 jobs, "of which 1,258 in the nursing career, 667 in the diagnostic and therapeutic technician career and 606 in the technical assistant career".

In education, science and innovation, there was an increase of "3,019 jobs, of which 1,125 in the careers of kindergarten teachers and primary and secondary school teachers, 829 in the career of operational assistant and 652 in the career of senior technician".

Of the 760,728 public administration workers, 62.5% are women and 37.5% men, according to the same figures.

In all, there are 16,234 managers, of whom 55.8% are women and 44.2% are men.

The most recent salary figures refer to April, when the average monthly basic salary was €1,863.4 and the average monthly salary was €2,223.7.

According to the DGAEP, “this growth is the result of the combination of several factors, such as: the updating of the value of the minimum monthly wage (RMMG) to €870 and the value of the Public Administration Remuneration Base (BRAP) to €878.41, the application of the remuneration enhancement measures approved for workers in public functions and the entry and exit of workers with different remuneration levels”.
