Lusa - Business News - Guinea-Bissau: President, Sierra Leon counterpart commit to fight terrorism

Bissau, Aug. 14, 2025 (Lusa) - The president of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló and his Sierra Leonean counterpart, who visited Bissau on Thursday, reaffirmed their commitment to continue the fight against terrorism and transnational crime in Africa, they announced in a statement.

The document, to which Lusa had access, was produced at the end of a visit of a few hours by the head of state of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, as part of a tour that takes him to several countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

A retired general, Maada Bio, is currently president-in-office of the ECOWAS conference of heads of state and government.

The Guinean president and his Sierra Leonean counterpart reaffirmed their commitment to working together to strengthen security in the sub-region and across the African continent.

‘In the field of security, the two heads of state challenged the other countries to join forces in the fight against terrorism, transnational organised crime and all illicit trafficking,’ reads the communiqué.

The two leaders also analysed the situation in the West African sub-region and Africa as a whole. They expressed their willingness to work together to resolve the crises and conflicts that are plaguing the continent, to promote and consolidate peace and stability, which are indispensable for sustainable development.

‘With this in mind, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepen their cooperation at the level of ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations and to strengthen the shared values of democracy, good governance and respect for human rights,’ the statements said.

The document also noted that the two African leaders analysed the state of cooperation between their respective countries and expressed the need to strengthen exchanges of experience in the fields of energy, public health, infrastructure and public sector reform.

Umaro Sissoco Embaló and Julius Maada Bio also expressed their desire to promote ‘stronger’ economic and commercial relations between the private sectors.
