Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Galp installs 74 MW of batteries to store solar for early evening peak

Lisbon, Aug. 1, 2025 (Lusa) - Galp has begun construction on five battery projects with a total capacity of 74 megawatts (MW) to store solar energy in Spain and Portugal, the company said in a statement.

The company explained that it will connect these storage units, supplied by Sungrow, to two of Galp’s largest photovoltaic solar parks, in Alcoutim (Algarve) and Manzanares (Castilla la Mancha).

In Portugal, Galp is developing four storage systems with a combined capacity of 60.5 megawatts / 120.4 megawatt-hours (two-hour batteries) integrated into its Alcoutim solar parks.

These projects, with a total investment of €27 million, which the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) partly finances through REPowerEU, are an expansion of the 5 megawatts project, which has been in operation since early 2025 in Alcoutim.

These batteries will enable the company to store excess solar production during the day and make it available to the electricity grid during peak demand periods, especially in the early evening.
