Maputo, July 28, 2025 (Lusa) - Mozambique’s government is collaborating with domestic and foreign investors and researchers to promote the local production of medicines, thereby enhancing self-sufficiency in pharmaceuticals, the head of state announced.
“Our government is deeply committed to encouraging local production of medicines and health products, not as a symbolic gesture, but as a real national priority, so that Mozambique can increase its self-sufficiency in essential drugs and serve our population,” said Daniel Chapo.
The president took the position ahead of the international conference on local production of medicines and health products, to be held in Maputo on 30-31 July, as part of the Mozambique International Health Expo 2024, organised by the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (Anarme).
“We are working closely with domestic and foreign investors, domestic and foreign researchers, regulators and the private sector to create incentives, policies and adequate infrastructure to make this vision a reality in the short term,” the head of state added.
"The time has come to invest in what we are capable of producing, to strengthen what we have managed to innovate and to protect the health of our people, which we always keep in-house," he said, adding that "Mozambique is ready" for this process.
“We are ready. Through this conference, we are opening the doors to investors, entrepreneurs, researchers and global partners who believe in Africa’s potential as a continent that leads the development of permanent solutions in access to safe, effective and quality medicines,” he added.
MIH Expo-24, according to the promoters, “is a comprehensive platform to present a unified international effort to strengthen health systems against climate-related risks, while promoting initiatives that drive the sector towards net zero environmental impact.”
The event will bring together key international stakeholders in the sector, policymakers, professionals, and innovators in Maputo to facilitate knowledge exchange, share best practices, and showcase cutting-edge innovations in the region.
“This is a strategic platform that reflects our nation’s unwavering commitment to building a resilient, inclusive health sector that is prepared to respond to the challenges of the present and the future.
After the Covid-19 pandemic, we witnessed the need to strengthen health systems globally. We learned the importance and urgency of having a robust health system capable of responding promptly to a wide range of situations,” said the head of state.
He added that the “health and well-being” of the population “is and will always be a priority,” hoping that this conference “will mark the beginning of new alliances, new ventures and new avenues of knowledge that will serve national interests and the region.”
“Together, we are building a nation where every Mozambican moves forward and the power to protect life remains faithfully in our hands,” concluded Daniel Chapo in his message on MIH Expo-24.
