Praia, July 25, 2025 (Lusa) - Power cuts have affected the island of Santiago since Thursday, including the capital of Cape Verde, because faults in two generator sets at the power station in the city of Praia disrupted service, the company’s management announced on Friday.
“The first generator (…) broke down a few days ago and had to go for maintenance,” he explained.
On Wednesday, the “second, more powerful” generator also broke down. “This situation reduces our availability, but our team is currently repairing both units,” said Antão Cruz, director of the Cabo Verde Electricity Production Company (EPEC), quoted by Radio Cabo Verde (RCV).
According to the official, the breakdowns are related to overheating caused by wear and tear on the exhaust system.
“The generators have protection systems to prevent damage to other components. This matter concerns an operational failure rather than a maintenance issue,” he added.
The first generator requires new parts and more extensive repairs.
In a statement released on Thursday, EPEC said that the island of Santiago experienced some sporadic power cuts, affecting some areas of Praia, due to mechanical maintenance work.
