Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Red Cross to help spot needy young people for vocational training

Praia, July 23, 2025 (Lusa) - The Red Cross of Cabo Verde will support the Government in identifying vulnerable young people for free access to vocational training, starting in September, in various areas, the two institutions announced on Wednesday at the signing of a protocol.

“We will launch around 100 training initiatives to benefit more than 4,000 young people in September. The Red Cross will certainly help to mobilise those who most need these tools for empowerment and integration into the labour market,” said Paulo Santos, chairman of the board of directors of the Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP).

Speaking on the sidelines of the signing of the protocol, he explained that it provides for the involvement of Red Cross volunteers in identifying beneficiaries.

The training will cover sectors considered strategic for the country's development, such as tourism, construction, the blue and green economy, mechanics and other technical areas.

“The Red Cross is an institution that works with people in the most vulnerable situations. Our common focus is to help those who need support and tools to improve their living conditions,” he stressed.

The president of the Red Cross of Cabo Verde, Arlindo Carvalho, said that the organisation is joining the project with a sense of mission and responsibility.

“We are committed to helping these opportunities reach those who really need them,” he reiterated.

In May, the Cabo Verdean government announced that, starting in September, it will make more than 3,000 places available to young people registered in the Single Social Register (CSU), with free access to vocational training and exemption from registration fees, facilitating qualification and access to employment.

At the end of 2023, Cabo Verde had around 324,000 people (63.6% of the resident population) registered in the CSU, spread across almost 86,700 households.

Of these, 42% were in the most vulnerable group in terms of social support distribution and 30% in the second most vulnerable group.

Created in 2018, the CSU brings together central government and local authorities to identify beneficiaries of measures implemented by the National Social Security Centre (CNPS), which is responsible for the non-contributory social support network, including social pensions, social inclusion income and support for medical evacuations abroad.
