Lisbon, June 23, 2025 (Lusa) - The number of unemployed people registered at employment centres fell by 3% in May, year-on-year, and 4.1% compared to April, to 300,905, according to data released on Monday by the IEFP.
According to the Institute for Employment and Professional Training (IEFP), at the end of May, “300,905 unemployed individuals were registered with employment services on the mainland and in the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira, representing 66.5% of a total of 452,697 job seekers”.
There are 9,358 fewer people registered at employment centres than in May 2024. This decline was “contributed to by those registered for less than 12 months (-10,751), those looking for a new job (-8,039) and those over 25 (-6,375)”, the IEFP revealed in a statement released today.
In a month-on-month comparison, i.e. compared to April, there are 12,718 fewer people registered at employment centres. This is the fourth consecutive month of decline, i.e. since February.
With regard to the most significant professional groups, compared to the same period last year, "there has been a decrease in unemployment in the professional groups of ‘administrative staff" (-13.9%), "technicians and intermediate professions" (-9.2%) and "skilled workers in industry, construction and crafts" (-6.5%)’.
On the other hand, there was an rise in unemployment in the group of “unskilled workers” (+5.2%)," notes the institute.
In regional terms, registered unemployment fell in all regions compared to the same period last year, with the sharpest decline in the autonomous region of Madeira (13.1%).
In a month-on-month comparison, “there was a decrease in all regions, with the overall reduction in unemployment in the order of -4.1%”, indicates the IEFP.
At the end of May, there were 18,133 job vacancies in employment services across the country, which corresponds to an increase in vacancies on file in the annual analysis (+5,904, +48.3%) and compared to the previous month (+1,308, +7.8%).
