Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Beira Baixa railway line reopen after Wednesday evening accident

Fundão, Castelo Branco, Portugal, June 20, 2025 (Lusa) - The Beira Baixa railway line in Fundão, in northern Portugal, closed since Wednesday due to an accident involving a passenger train and a truck at a level crossing, was reopened on Thursday evening “after safety and traffic conditions were restored,” according to a source from Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP).

“Rail traffic has been restored on the section of the Beira Baixa Line between Vale de Prazeres and Castelo Novo, following the incident that occurred Wednesday in the late afternoon, near the Alpedrinha level crossing,” an official source from IP (the country's road and rail infrastructure managing company) reported in a statement sent to Lusa.

The line had been closed since Wednesday night following a collision between an Intercidades train and a truck at the Alpedrinha level crossing, in the district of Fundão, in the Castelo Branco region.

At least four people suffered minor injuries and six were treated after the collision. The accident occurred at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Intercidades train, which departed from Guarda bound for Lisbon, was carrying 118 passengers, according to a statement from the passenger train operator CP - Comboios de Portugal.

According to CP, the train collided with a heavy goods vehicle at the Alpedrinha level crossing and, after the collision, the vehicle caught fire, which spread to one of the carriages.

A source from the Beiras and Serra da Estrela Sub-regional Command said at 10 p.m. on Wednesday night that the fire was already under control.
