Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Most people know 'something' about AI - study

Lisbon, May 21, 2025 (Lusa) - Most Portuguese people already know "something" about artificial intelligence (AI) and three out of four people already use the technology, Isabel Moreira, from Netsonda, the company that conducted the study on the subject for DE-CIX, told Lusa.

"What I would highlight most is that artificial intelligence is already very present in the lives of the Portuguese," with "most already knowing something" about AI and "aware that the technology exists" in their daily lives, "but still unable to describe it clearly," says the market research technician at Netsonda.

"It is also very interesting that three out of four people who responded to this study already use artificial intelligence in their daily lives," which "gives us an idea that Portugal already uses artificial intelligence quite a lot and is aware that it is already present in many platforms and services that we have," Isabel Moreira added.

The quantitative study was carried out using an online questionnaire conducted by the Netsonda panel. It involved a representative sample of the Portuguese population aged between 18 and 64.

Eight hundred online interviews were conducted, corresponding to a margin of error of plus or minus 3.46%. The information was collected between 9 and 16 April, in an inquiry by Netsonda in collaboration with DE-CIX, the world's leading Internet Exchange (IX) operator.

"It was a partnership in which we created a specific study just to explore how the Portuguese perceive artificial intelligence, whether the Portuguese already know in which areas it is applied and what the Portuguese perception is of artificial intelligence in the future, how it will evolve," explained Isabel Moreira.

According to the study, 99% of Portuguese people have heard of AI. Still, three out of 10 respondents who say they have heard of the technology associate it only with artificial intelligence without further specification.

When asked about the definition of AI, more than a fifth (21%) replied that it is a quick and easy tool that helps in everyday life.

More than two-thirds (76%) of Portuguese people have already used an AI tool or service, with the majority saying that it is widespread across all sectors.

Young people between the ages of 18 and 24 use AI much more (93%) than those between 55 and 64, where 65% already use a tool or service with artificial intelligence.

ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool, used by 73% of respondents, followed by Gemini, with 12%.

Three out of four respondents (75%) believe that AI is used in marketing and advertising (75%) and customer service (73%), the two most frequently mentioned areas.

This is followed by entertainment (68%) and cybersecurity (67%). Conversely, its use in the transport sector was the least mentioned, at 37%.

Notably, more than a third (36%) say they can trust AI to make critical decisions, with 40% of responses coming from men and 32% from women.
