Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Azores international image boosted by Expo Osaka presence - official

Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal, April 14, 2025 (Lusa) - The vice-president of the Portuguese regional government of the Azores highlighted the opportunity to project the region's international image and new investment opportunities with the Azorean presence at Expo Osaka in Japan, it was announced on Monday.

"The expectation is that the participation of the Azores in the exhibition will contribute to strengthening the international image of the region and attracting investment and new development opportunities," said Artur Lima at the opening of Expo Osaka.

The theme of the Expo, which runs until 13 October, is ‘Designing Future Societies for Our Lives’ and 158 countries are taking part, including Portugal.

Artur Lima, quoted in a press release from the Azorean executive (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM), emphasised that "the projection of the Azores and international collaboration are crucial elements for sustainable development and for solving complex problems that transcend geographical borders".

"The Azores, with their exuberant nature and their commitment to development models that respect the environment, have a lot to contribute to the discussion about a greener and more resilient future," emphasised the vice-president of the regional government of the Azores on Sunday at the opening of the event.

This is also an opportunity to "boost scientific cooperation between the Azores and Japan", with a view to "continuing the projection of the Region as an Atlantic research platform", added Artur Lima, who attended the opening of the event at the invitation of Portugal's commissioner-general for Expo 2025 Osaka, Joana Gomes Cardoso.

The event brings together countries from all over the world to share innovations, cultures and visions for the future.

"The presence of the Azores at this event signals the importance of this international fair for the Autonomous Region of the Azores, offering unique opportunities to promote the archipelago in a wide range of areas," emphasised Artur Lima, who is responsible for attracting foreign investment and promoting the region's economic potential.

Expo 2025 Osaka is the stage for debate and the presentation of innovative solutions to global challenges, covering areas such as sustainability, cutting-edge technology and international cooperation.

The vice-president said that "the regional government of the Azores has an interest in closely following global trends and positioning the region as an active agent in building a more prosperous and equitable future".

Portugal, with the 5th largest Exclusive Economic Zone in Europe and the 20th largest in the world, is taking part in this international fair with the theme ‘Ocean: Blue Dialogue’, reads the executive's note, indicating that a themed event dedicated to the Azores will take place from 14 to 16 August at the Portugal Pavilion, including a temporary exhibition, as well as the promotion of typical regional products.

Regional products are currently on sale in the Portugal Pavilion shop at the world expo.

The Azores will be present under the theme ‘Between Hearts’, a cultural bridge linking the Portuguese archipelago to Japan.
