Lusa - Business News - Portugal: River Tagus Barreiro-Lisbon ferry service halted due to bad weather

Barreiro, Setúbal, Portugal, March 7, 2025 (Lusa) - The Tagus river ferry service between Barreiro, on the south bank, and Terreiro do Paço, in downtown Lisbon, is temporarily suspended on Friday due to adverse weather and sea conditions, announced the operator Transtejo Soflusa.

In a notice to passengers published on its official website, the operator said that it is not yet possible to predict when the regular service will resume.

Transtejo Soflusa is the company responsible for the river ferry service between Seixal, Montijo, Cacilhas, Barreiro and Trafaria/Porto Brandão, in the district of Setúbal, and Lisbon.

The national maritime authority and the navy today warned of a ‘considerable worsening’ of the weather and rough seas in mainland Portugal over the next few days, urging the public to be careful.

Swells are expected to come from the north-north-west quadrant, with a significant height that could reach "seven metres and a maximum height of 13 metres, with an average period varying between 12 and 14 seconds".

In addition, winds are also expected from the north-west quadrant, with an average intensity of up to 65 kilometres per hour (km/hour) and gusts of up to 117 km/hour.

For these reasons, the authorities are warning the entire maritime community and the public in general to take care, both when preparing to go to sea and when at sea or in coastal areas.

The national emergency and civil protection authority (ANEPC) has also alerted the public to the possibility of flooding and accidents.

In a statement, ANEPC said that the Portugal's national meteorological institute (IPMA) is forecasting heavy rain, hail and thunderstorms, wind, "with gusts of up to 85 km/hour on the coast and up to 100 km/hour in the highlands", rough seas on the coast, with waves of up to five metres, and snowfall in the highest points of the Serra da Estrela mountain range.

The national meteorological institute has issued a yellow warning - the least serious on a scale of three - for today throughout mainland Portugal due to rain and wind.
