Coimbra, Portugal, Jan. 3, 2025 (Lusa) - Coimbra Railway Station will be closed from the 12th so that work can continue on converting the railway line to the Metrobus solution, Metro Mondego said on Friday.
In a statement sent to the Lusa news agency, Metro Mondego said that connections to Coimbra Station will be cancelled as soon as the train departs at 00:20 on the 12th.
‘With the construction of the Mondego Mobility System, the railway connection between Coimbra B and Coimbra (also known as Estação Nova) will be definitively deactivated,’ it added.
From that day until the Mondego Mobility System section, which will connect Portagem to Coimbra B, comes into operation, Metro Mondego will provide a road transfer system between the two stations.
‘This system, which will be free of charge for CP passengers, will have a stop next to each station, at locations that will be duly signposted.’
According to Metro Mondego, the buses that will provide this service will be properly identified and there will be support staff to ensure that passengers are directed.
‘The planned frequency is 12 buses per hour, during peak periods, decreasing slightly outside these periods, ensuring a connection to all the trains that currently arrive (or depart) from Coimbra Station and which will now terminate at Coimbra B Station.’
The work on this section of the Mondego Mobility System, which is the responsibility of Infraestruturas de Portugal, ‘should be completed by the end of 2025, allowing the metrobus to make the connection between Portagem and Coimbra B from that date’.
