Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Only 3.9% of buildings refurbished until 2023, 2030 target is 49%

Lisbon, Dec. 13, 2024 (Lusa) — Portugal has only renovated 3.9% of residential and non-residential buildings since 2018, with the target for 2030 being 49%, according to a report released Friday by the Portuguese Energy Agency(Adene).

Between 2018 and 2023, Portugal reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from residential and non-residential buildings by 45.7%, according to the report by the Coordination Group for the Long-Term Strategy for Building Renovation (ELPRE). This decrease is partly due to the increase in renewable energy production, both locally and at source, and the disappearance of coal from the electricity generation system.

According to the report, the residential building stock recorded a 3% decrease in primary energy consumption and the non-residential building stock showed a 10.1% reduction in 2023.

The document mentions an upward trend in renewable energy production between 2018 and 2023, with local renewable energy production increasing by 21.6% in the residential stock, 27.4% in the non-residential stock and 24.1% in the total building stock.

Even so, the coordination group emphasises the importance of ‘strengthening financial mechanisms and tax incentives to promote energy efficiency’, adding that it is necessary to promote an ‘action plan dedicated to the refurbishment of public administration buildings’.
