HINA - Use of digital banking rising in Croatia

ZAGREB, 15 June (Hina) - According to the Croatian National Bank (HNB), as of 2024, 49% of consumers and 69% of businesses in Croatia have internet banking, while 63% of consumers and 65% of businesses use mobile banking.

The number of mobile banking users increased by 10.9%, and that of internet banking users by 11.6% compared to the previous year.

Mobile banking transactions by consumers rose by 14% in volume and 27% in value, while businesses saw a 17% increase in the number and a 26% increase in the value of such transactions.

The HNB notes that mobile phones are increasingly becoming the preferred device for initiating electronic transactions.

In 2024, consumers made 12.1 million internet banking transactions worth €3.9 billion, and 162 million mobile banking transactions worth €25.6 billion.

Card payments and credit transfers made up the majority (50% and 33%, respectively) of all national cashless transactions. For international transactions, card payments dominated with 91%, while credit transfers accounted for 9%.

In terms of total transaction value, credit transfers were overwhelmingly dominant, accounting for 96% of national and 93% of international cashless transaction value, reflecting their use in high-value payments such as salaries, pensions, and inter-company transfers.

Over the past five years, the number of national card transactions rose by 70%, and their value by 93%, with the average Croat now owning two payment cards.
