Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Airbnb guests in Lisbon, Porto spent €116/day during trip in 2023

Lisbon, Sept. 3, 2024 (Lusa) - Airbnb guests in Portugal spent around €116 per day during their trip, bringing in revenues of €2.4 billion and taxes of €1.1 billion, an analysis by the platform reveals.

According to an analysis to estimate the economic impact of Airbnb in Portugal, the accommodation platform concluded that ‘’trips via Airbnb generated more than €2.4 billion in revenue and almost €1.1 billion in taxes‘’ in the country in 2023.

The estimated amount for taxes includes those associated with hosts‘ income and spending, economic activity resulting from guests’ visits to local businesses and also ‘more than €63.3 million in tourist taxes collected and remitted by Airbnb on behalf of hosts in the cities of Lisbon and Porto’.

The projected amount of revenue was calculated based on feedback from 4,000 guests of the platform in Portugal, surveyed between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2023, revealing that ‘in 2023, guests on Airbnb reported spending around €116 per day during their trip and approximately 38% of these expenses were made in the neighbourhood/area where they were staying’.

Taking into account the direct and indirect impact of trips via this platform, Airbnb also estimates that it has been possible to support 55,000 jobs in Portugal, the majority of which (60%) are linked to catering, local businesses and shops, entertainment and events.

This study was carried out using IMPLAN Cloud, ‘software that combines data and analytics to better understand how home sharing supports economic activity in local communities in Portugal’, Airbnb said in a statement.
