Portimão, Portugal, Sept. 16, 2026 (Lusa) - André Gomes, president of the Algarve Tourism Region, is pleased with the date announced on Wednesday for the Portuguese Formula 1 Grand Prix, 20 June 2027, as it falls outside the «high season».
Speaking to Agência Lusa, he said this was the date they had «always been working towards» and the «best» for the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão to host the race.
«We managed to secure a date just before the peak season, which was our aim,» he revealed, adding that the negotiations had proceeded «as normal».
André Gomes explained that the date for the Portuguese race «had to fall within the European ‘window', when the other Grand Prix races are also held», adding: «The announcement had been postponed due to the conflicts in the Middle East, but it was finally confirmed today and we can now move on to the second phase».
This phase will involve, according to the Algarve tourism official, «promoting the event both at home and abroad, always in collaboration with Turismo de Portugal and the Algarve International Circuit».
According to André Gomes, the race in the pinnacle class of motor racing is «much more than just a Grand Prix», and the aim is to «provide a complete experience» for visitors.
«This is a unique opportunity for Formula 1 fans to discover the Algarve, an authentic destination that is already a favourite among the Portuguese,» he said.
In addition to the 2027 event, the Portuguese Grand Prix will also take place in 2028, which has already been confirmed.
These will be the 19th and 20th editions of the Portuguese Grand Prix, once again in the Algarve, following the inaugural races in 1958 and 1960 at the Boavista circuit in Porto, the 1959 race at Monsanto in Lisbon, and the races held between 1984 and 1996 at the Estoril Autodrome in Cascais.
Formula 1 returned to Portugal in 2020, after a 24-year hiatus from the World Championship, following the reorganisation of the calendar due to the Covid-19 pandemic, for the first of two races in Portimão, which is set to return to the World Championship.
Britain's Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, then driving for Mercedes, won the last two races on Portuguese soil.
