Lusa - Business News - Timor-Leste: Nation joins Convention on Cluster Munitions, International Atomic Energy Agency

Dili, Sept. 16, 2026 (Lusa) - Timor-Leste acceded this week to the Convention on Cluster Munitions and to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the government announced on Wednesday.

Timor-Leste submitted its declaration of accession to the Convention on Cluster Munitions on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the Convention's Third Review Conference, which is taking place in Laos until Friday and is being attended by Foreign Minister Bendito Freitas.

In his address at the conference on Monday, Minister Bendito dos Santos Freitas reaffirmed «Timor-Leste's determination to contribute to international efforts to promote peace, human dignity and the protection of future generations, and called for strengthened regional and international cooperation in the field of humanitarian disarmament», according to the government's statement.

The International Atomic Energy Agency acknowledged Timor-Leste on Monday as the 182nd member state during the opening of the organisation's 70th General Conference in Vienna, Austria, which runs until Friday.

The Timorese Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Jesuína Gomes, emphasised at the ceremony that the country's accession «reflects Timor-Leste's commitment to multilateralism, nuclear non-proliferation and the use of nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes», the government noted.
