Lusa - Business News - Portugal: New car registrations up over 10% until August YoY

Lisbon, Sept. 1, 2026 (Lusa) - The car market in Portugal grew by 10.3% between January and August, with 197,632 new vehicles, according to figures released today by ACAP – the Portuguese Automobile Association.

«From 1 January 2026 to 31 August 2026, 197,632 new vehicles were registered, representing an increase of 10.3% compared with the same period last year,» the association stated in a press release.

In August alone, registrations in Portugal totalled 17,209 motor vehicles, an increase of 11.3% compared with the same month in 2025.

In the period from January to August, 169,323 light vehicles were registered, a year-on-year increase of 9.5%.

During this period, 75.6% of newly registered light passenger vehicles were powered by alternative fuels.

In particular, 26.8% of new light passenger vehicles were electric.

Meanwhile, the light goods vehicle market totalled 22,299 units, an increase of 9.8% compared with the same period in 2025.

Up to August, registrations of heavy goods vehicles stood at 6,010 units, up 39.6% compared with the same period last year.
