Lisbon, Aug. 27, 2026 (Lusa) - Portugal's Fidelidade Insurance Company has so far incurred costs totalling €2.3 million in connection with the Glória funicular accident in Lisbon, including four compensation payments to the families of those killed, it announced on Thursday.
With just a few days to go before the first anniversary of the tragic accident involving the historic Glória funicular, which claimed 16 lives and left 24 people injured from 15 different nationalities, Fidelidade stated in a press release that, to date, «it has directly borne, or assumed responsibility for the reimbursement of, approximately €2.3 million in expenses related to the accident, including, in addition to the compensation agreements already reached, funeral services, repatriation, medical consultations, treatment, hospitalisation, surgical procedures, rehabilitation, transport and lost wages, amongst others».
Regarding the 16 fatalities, the company has concluded compensation agreements with four families and is currently negotiating seven cases.
«One case is following the relevant legal proceedings, as the parties are still working to reach an agreement on the proposal put forward,» the insurer revealed, adding that «there is another fatality whose case is being dealt with exclusively under the workplace accident scheme, and to whom provisional pensions are being paid; these will continue until the proceedings before the employment tribunal are concluded».
The company is still working to finalise compensation proposals for three cases, primarily because it is awaiting essential documentation and addressing the specific legal requirements of the countries involved.
As for the 24 injured, «a final assessment of compensation can only be carried out once their clinical condition has stabilised, allowing the extent of any long-term effects and the injuries sustained to be properly determined», and the process is ongoing in all cases.
The insurer emphasised that it comments only on matters of general policy, respecting the duties of confidentiality and privacy owed to victims and their families by refraining from discussing individual cases or personal or clinical information.
Highlighting the «particular complexity» of some of the cases, Fidelidade stated that the conclusion of the claims «depends, essentially, on the victims' clinical stabilisation, on obtaining the details necessary to assess the damages and, in compensation claims, on an agreement between the parties».
The Glória funicular derailment occurred on 3 September 2025 and, following the accident, Lisbon City Council, chaired by the Social Democrat Carlos Moedas, approved measures to support the victims and to design a new technological system for the Glória funicular, as well as the creation of a memorial on Calçada da Glória.
Over the past few months, the opposition to the PSD/CDS-PP/IL coalition government has called for more information and answers regarding the Glória funicular accident, with the PS city councillors urging Carlos Moedas to adopt a more proactive approach to keep the matter in the public eye.
