Lisbon, Aug. 27, 2026 (Lusa) - Portuguese engineering firm Martifer has been awarded a contract for the expansion of Lisbon Airport, which includes work on the steel structure, roofing and façades.
According to the half-yearly report and accounts for the first half of this year, published on Wednesday by the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM), the contract was awarded to Martifer Metallic Constructions, «covering the South Apron, the South Pier and the Central Pier», that is, the southern aircraft parking and ground handling area and the terminal's South and Central boarding areas.
The project involves approximately 17,700 m² of façades, 3,924 tonnes of steel structure and 45,000 m² of cladding, and will be carried out in a consortium with Blocotelha, responsible for the structure and roofing, and with Facal, responsible for the façades.
«The project forms part of a strategic modernisation programme for Portugal's largest airport, operated by ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal, with the aim of increasing operational capacity, improving the passenger experience and enhancing the sustainability of the infrastructure by reducing energy and water consumption,» states Martifer.
The group does not specify, in the report, the value of the contract or the expected timeframe for completion of the works.
The contract award for Lisbon follows on from other airport projects carried out by Martifer abroad, notably in Marseille, Geneva and Dublin.
In September 2021, Martifer's French subsidiary, in a consortium with two companies from the Vinci group, won a contract for the expansion of Marseille Provence Airport.
The works awarded to Martifer had an estimated value of €35 million, out of a total contract worth €125 million, and included steel structures, glass façades, skylights and aluminium cladding.
Back in 2017, it announced that it had been awarded a €45 million contract at Geneva International Airport in Switzerland for the supply and installation of the steel structure for the East Wing, with an expected completion time of 24 months.
A decade earlier, in 2007, the company joined a Portuguese-Irish consortium for the construction of the new Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport, with Martifer responsible for works worth €43.2 million. The consortium's overall contract, which also included Mota-Engil and the Irish firm Coffey, totalled €52.7 million.
At the end of June this year, Martifer's order book for its steel construction and shipbuilding segments stood at €579 million.
In the first half of 2026, Martifer recorded a loss of €7.9 million, compared with a profit of €7.8 million in the same period the previous year, due to the recognition of €11 million in provisions for costs linked to the Glasgow Arena and Amazonia Arena projects.
